Two exciting Poetry Slams take place on Saturday and Sunday, each beginning at 1 p.m. in Chess Park and featuring three rounds of performances. Poets will perform two poems, with the top three advancing to a clean-slate final round. First place each day earns $500 and a berth to the 2026 Chicharra Festival Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, NM. Second place receives $150, and third place earns $100.
Saturday’s festivities also include Open Mic sessions from 12 to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m., with all performance acts welcome—poetry, stories, or song. The afternoon Open Mic will feature a 15-minute performance by Ms. Jennifer Hairston, an outstanding poet who specializes in poetry as therapy, transforming verse into a healing and empowering experience for all. Each Open Mic includes a $50 prize for Most Inspired Performance.
On Sunday, don’t miss the debut of The Form Slam from 3 to 4 p.m., where up to seven poets perform classic forms like sonnets, villanelles, and pantoums for a $250 first prize. A final Open Mic follows from 4 to 5 p.m., again awarding $50 for Most Inspired Performance.
